IN HALE WALLPIECE

Ben Storms

In creating In Hale Wall Piece, Ben Storms extracted the metal pillow from the In Hale series and brought it into a new situation, allowing its characteristics to emerge differently. But where this variation seems to be mainly a shift in focus, an undivided, dedication to one specific element, it soon turns out that there is,much more at hand than that. For where In Hale initially existed exclusively as a horizontal structure, a layered stacking of separate volumes, the work is now mounted vertically against the wall.nA bold decision, impacting its relationship to gravity and the ways in which the metal interacts with the environment and light. Yet the process preceding the work remains unchanged. A tried and tested method that was already applied in the creation of In Hale. Including a technique for inflating what is essentially non-inflatable, two partially joined metal surfaces - sheets of stainless steel, copper or brass - are modelled into a pillow-shape, using a negative landscape with the function of a mould.. A voluminous body that, once installed within a space, will uniquely reflect what happens inside; the people in attendance and the passing light, their features slightly distorted. And although each result differs to some extent, determined by the peculiarities of this particular manner of working, the pieces can be adapted in accordance with their destination.
